The mihrab is flanked on each side by a hand panel (each is adorned with a hand motif). Some eagle-eyed viewers might spot that one hand has five fingers and a thumb! The field is decorated with a central totemic pole with hooks protruding from each side and this is flanked by a column of boteh (paisley-like) motifs - an ancient emblem found across Afghanistan and Persia.

The condition of this antique Belouch rug

This prayer rug has low pile all over it consistent with its age.

It doesn't have any holes, but the bottom section of the rug has considerably lower/thinner pile than the remainder (see images 8, 9 & 10). These are desirable rugs and recognisable for their strong geometric designs and clear uniformity of colour. Identifiable features of Caucasian Kazak rugs (from this era) are that the warp threads (these are the fringe threads that we can see at each end of the rug) are of natural coloured wool.

The weft threads are also made of wool: typically red or brown, with two wefts threads inserted after each row of knots. In weaving cultures decorative languages were always inspired across borders and cultures. Here decorative floral and rose patterning was heavily influenced and artfully inspired by 19th Century French designs hailing from Aubusson and Savonnerie Carpets. These designs were not copied as such, but reinterpreted by regional weavers. Karabagh rugs are also historically known for being characteristically versatile in design, and this piece is a beautiful example of this. This tradition and exchanging of decorative motifs has always occured in Persia and the Caucasus with the West.

Colour and Decorative Features of this Handmade Rug

This antique rug has a floral-filled field and border. There is an abundance of rose and rose leaves with a naturalistic interpretation in rose-pinks, light greens, fushias, teals, as well as golden ochres. Karabagh rugs are also renowned for their dramatic colour contrasts, and this can certainly be explored in this unique piece as there is a rich tonality; particularly with deep blues of the border background and blue-black midnight richness of the main field offsetting the flourishing florals.

Within the field you can also discover decorative improvisatory devices amongst the bouquets, as well as fine rendering of the inner field with a decoration of an angular geometic meandering motif in a deep chestnest brown combined with a bright golden-ochre free flowing curling vine. At once complex and intricate as well as beautifully and artisically woven.

Karabagh Rugs and their Design

The huge repertoire of Karabagh rug design can be broadly divided into four categories: those resembling neighbouring Kazak Rugs, designs descended from early workshop pieces, Persian influenced designs; and those woven to appeal to Russian and other foreign markets.

This piece obviously falls into the final category. The weave structure of Tekke rugs is that they have a flat back, a non-depressed weave construction, meaning that there are not deep grooves between the knots on the back of the rug.

About the design of this antique Turkoman rug

Turkoman rugs are known for their field designs of repeating emblems known as "guls".

These, often octagonal shaped motifs, are called guls which means flower. Each tribe has it's own gul motifs, a heraldic tribal emblem unique to that specific tribe. The guls displayed in a Turkoman rug, consist of a larger (primary) gul and a smaller (minor) gul.

A distinguishing feature of Tekke rugs is that often the primary guls are linked together. The attractive minor guls that we can see in this rug are known as Tshemtshe guls.

The Tekke

The Tekke were the largest and most dominant of the Turkoman tribes. They settled in many areas of Turkmenistan in the Nineteenth century.

Following the completion of the Central Asian Railway in 1888, the Tekke Rugs were among the first Turkoman Rugs to be exported in large numbers to the West. It was in this era that the name of the market town "Bokhara" was applied to Tekke rugs (as well as other Turkoman rugs).

Using this antique rug in your home

This fine antique Tekke rug is still useable and is an appealing decorative choice for use in your home.
