antique-karabagh-rug-with-gul-farang-design
Antique Karabagh Rug with Gul Farang design

This exquisite Handmade Caucasian rug expresses the theme of depicted florals inspired by nature, often referred to as 'Gul Farang' and is strongly associated with Antique Caucasian Rugs from the most southerly region of the Caucasus; named Karabagh. Floral bouquets and flourishing flowers feature in this type of rug with interpretations of more naturalistic flowers and bouquets of European influence.

'What is a Gul Farang Design?'

Gul farang refers to 'Gul' meaning a 'flower' motif and 'farang' meaning foreign / of western influence. In weaving cultures decorative languages were always inspired across borders and cultures. Here decorative floral and rose patterning was heavily influenced and artfully inspired by 19th Century French designs hailing from Aubusson and Savonnerie Carpets. These designs were not copied as such, but reinterpreted by regional weavers. Karabagh rugs are also historically known for being characteristically versatile in design, and this piece is a beautiful example of this. This tradition and exchanging of decorative motifs has always occured in Persia and the Caucasus with the West.

Colour and Decorative Features of this Handmade Rug

This antique rug has a floral-filled field and border. There is an abundance of rose and rose leaves with a naturalistic interpretation in rose-pinks, light greens, fushias, teals, as well as golden ochres. Karabagh rugs are also renowned for their dramatic colour contrasts, and this can certainly be explored in this unique piece as there is a rich tonality; particularly with deep blues of the border background and blue-black midnight richness of the main field offsetting the flourishing florals.

Within the field you can also discover decorative improvisatory devices amongst the bouquets, as well as fine rendering of the inner field with a decoration of an angular geometic meandering motif in a deep chestnest brown combined with a bright golden-ochre free flowing curling vine. At once complex and intricate as well as beautifully and artisically woven.

Karabagh Rugs and their Design

The huge repertoire of Karabagh rug design can be broadly divided into four categories: those resembling neighbouring Kazak Rugs, designs descended from early workshop pieces, Persian influenced designs; and those woven to appeal to Russian and other foreign markets.

This piece obviously falls into the final category. This floral type Karabagh rug was developed for the occupying Russian and foreign markets with French curvilinear bouquet-style designs. At the time, these would have been significantly a less expensive alternative to the costly French Aubusson and Savonnerie imports.

Key Details:

Country of Origin : The Caucasus ( Southern Region: Karabagh)

Dimensions: 165 x 103cm / 5'5" x 3'5"

Thickness: 4mm

Pile: Wool, Handknotted

Warp: Wool

Condition: Some wear consistent with age (see images 5 & 6), as well as some expert re-piling (images 7 & 9)
