It was made entirely from wool; it has a fine hand-knotted wool pile knotted onto woollen warps. You can see in the final image the fineness of the weave, which is impressive given the moderate cost of the rug.

The Belouch are prolific weavers of rugs and tribal textiles. A small rug or mat like this was probably woven as either the face of a tribal bag, or perhaps given it's high quality, as a cushion face.

Key details:

Country of origin: Afghanistan

Size: 48x90cm / 1’7″x3’0″

Thickness: 6mm

Pile: Wool, hand-knotted

Warp: Wool

Age: Around 20 years old

Condition: It is in good order with full pile, slight wear to corner (see image 5).
