Flatwoven kilims, because of the nature of their plainwave, can be used either way up.

What is a Kilim?

A kilim is a type of artistic handmade floor covering that has a specific type of weave called 'flatweave'. Every weaving culture has their variants of flatweave techniques which, on some occasions, can be quite complex. Kilims are essentially woven pieces that do not contain knots, and therefore no pile. This kilim is woven with wool weft threads and cotton warps; so essentially the colour and pattern are the wefts that are woven back and forth across the piece over and under the warps.

What are the Stylistic Features of this Kilim?

This contemporary piece has some wonderful geometric compartmentalized patterning with subtle vertical stripes. This is owing to the nature of the construction as there are limitations owing to weaving technicalities with all flatweaves compared to rugs with pile. However, there are no limitations on uniqueness of design, geometric inventiveness or colouring. Kilims can be impactful in their design bringing modern vibes to a scheme. This piece also has the benefit of an array of soft, pastel-like tones which will blend into interiors with hints of colour and a measured design. Interior stylists and designers are devotees of using stripes and geometrics to offset and balance schemes.

What Restful Colours are to be discovered in this Kilim?

This kilim is deceptively simple, yet on closer inspection the clever composition has a restful balance of interlinking variations of striped motifs with whispers of coral pinks, light terracottas, light blues, stone greys, mauve greys and light apricots.

How to Take Care of this Modern Pastel Kilim

Because traditional handmade flatweave kilims lack pile they tend not to trap dirt easily and only require a weekly vacuum. The wefts are pure wool so naturally dirt resistant. With any spillages simply blot with a light detergent. Don't forget to consider using a recommended underlay for kilims on hard floors or fitted carpets.

Key Details

Country of Origin: Afghanistan

Dimensions: 180 x 120cm / 5'11'' x 3'11"

Thickness: 4mm

Weft: Wool, Handwoven

Warp: Cotton

Age: New
