serapi-rug-from-afghanistan
Handmade Afghan Serapi Rug

This handknotted Afghan Serapi rug has all the design features of famous Serapi Carpets with geometric florals and interconnecting stylised botanicals linking serrated medallions that fill the field. Historical Serapi Carpets were know as finely woven carpets from the Heriz region of North West Persia in the late 19th Century. This rug takes it's design repertoire from antique Serapi carpets with all over geometric botanical features but with soft colours of light grey and light green.

What is the Colour Composition of this Rug?

Within a traditional geometric format there are some captivating soft colour combinations to be discovered. The handspun pure wool pile's yarn is dyed with natural vegetable dyes. These hues are an artful blend of pastel-like tones; light grey main field, green background of border and delicate accents of golden yellow and soft reds. The central serrated medallion motif has a soft light blue tonality.

What are the Recognisable Motifs of this Geometric Design Rug?

The geometric floralism is very characteristic of Serapi Carpets as well as the rhythmic repetition of the stylized vine and rosette in the main field and angular medallion/ diamond shapes. The main border is just as integral to the piece as the main geometric framework overall. This handwoven rug has a meandering vine and rosette border with alternating blue and yellow rosettes with soft red stylized vine. This more curvilinear border harmonises and softness the overal geometric main field.

Key Details :

Country or Origin: Afghanistan

Dimensions: 172 x 121cm / 5'8" x 4'0"

Thickness: 8mm

Pile: Wool

Warp: Cotton

Age: New
