The kepse gul is special because it relates to the Yamoud (sometimes referred to as Yamut) tribe. On Turkoman rugs the gul motif is an emblem that repeats over the field of the rug, and these gul emblems are specific to certain tribes. The kepse gul in this rug is synonymous with the Yamoud tribe.

Historically, the Yamoud were the third largest of the Turkoman tribes after the Tekke and the Ersari. This newly made Yamoud design rug was handwoven in Turkmenistan in the vicinity of Ashkabad.

Find out what this Yamoud design rug was made from

The materials used to make this Yamoud rug have changed little from the days of the weaver's nomadic ancestors. In keeping with tradition, this Turkoman rug was woven entirely from wool.

The handsome colours and captivating design are made from a woollen pile. For the foundations of the rug, the weaver has also used wool. The foundation threads in a handmade rug are known as the warp threads and the weft threads.

The warp threads serve as the base yarns upon which the rug is woven. These are the first yarns to be applied onto the loom at the start of the project. The long fringes that you can see (which you can easily trim shorter if you desire) are in fact the warp threads.

The weft threads are not so apparent. The wefts in this case are also wool. These are sandwiched between each row of knots and thus travel across the width of the rug.

How this traditional red rug was made

This traditional rug was handwoven by time-honoured rug making methods. These rug weaving techniques have been perfected over generations with these skills being passed from one generation to the next.

The luxurious woollen pile was made by a method known as hand-knotting. This is a slow process to make a rug, but one that takes skill and dedication.

On a hand-knotted rug, the pile is made by hand-tying coloured yarn onto pairs of warp threads. The weaver (one weaver would have woven this rug) ties the knots across the loom in rows. Once the row of knots is completed, weft threads are the next yarn to be woven intersecting the warp threads. These processes will be undertaken numerous times until the rug is finished.

You can marvel at how all of the individually tied knots of many different colours combine to make the pattern of the rug. When you think about it, it's really rather incredible.

Using this handmade rug in your home

This Turkoman red rug will be an easy rug to live with. It was well made: tightly knotted and woven with hard wearing wool.

The size of it makes it a versatile option for many rooms. It would make a nice hearth rug with it's cosy colours and fascinating design. Alternatively, it would be durable enough to use in an entrance hall.

Wherever you decide to unroll it, consider partnering it with an anti-slip rug underlay. This will help stop it from slipping and will help prevent uneven wear by keeping it snugly against the floor.

Key details:

Country of origin: Turkmenistan

Size: 200×130cm / 6’7″x4’3″ (measurement not including fringe)

Thickness: 9mm

Pile: Wool, hand-knotted

Warp: Wool

Age: Like new, it doesn't appear to have been used, perhaps 10-20 years old
