It displays an archaic geometric pattern featuring a theme of three medallions set against a rich rust-red field. As an artisanal handcrafted rug you can see that in these three medallions that each varies in shape (especially the ones at each end).
The border pattern is also captivating. The main border shows a theme of bird motifs set against a golden-beige backdrop. Look closely and you will see that each bird motif contains a smaller bird emblem within it. How cute!
Aside from its appealing design, this fine Kazak rug has delightful colours. The warming rust-red field colour and gold-beige of the border are the ones that stand out, however on close inspection you will notice an array of other shades. These other colours include navy blue, sage green, grey-blue and salmon.
Learn some more about this fine Afghan Kazak rug
The design of this rust-red handmade rug is not native to Afghanistan. The design takes its inspiration from the rugs made in the Caucasus. This is an area of land encompassing current day Azerbaijan and Armenia.
The antique Caucasian rugs are known for their bright colours and beguiling designs. The Kazak rugs from this area, from which this rug takes it's name, are amongst the most well known of all Caucasian rugs. Although this Afghan rug was named after Kazak rugs, it's design draws upon the design vocabulary of rugs from across this region.
These fine Afghan Kazak rugs are also sometimes known by monikers such as Super Kazak, Supreme Kazak or Royal Kazak.
The materials this Afghan rug is made from
This fine Kazak rug was handcrafted from traditional rug making fibres: wool and cotton. Over centuries of rug weaving, these two fibres have been proven to be durable and long-lasting.
The woollen part of this rug is what really stands out. This is the pile that shows the beautifully cosy colours and intriguing patterns. This wool is hand-spun and naturally dyed. Although it is more expensive to produce hand-spun wool it is beneficial because the wool fibres can be spun tightly thereby creating a sturdy yarn.
The cotton yarns in this Afghan rug are the warp threads. The warp threads are the underlying threads upon which the rug was created. This are the first threads that the weaver attached onto the loom and on the completed rug you can see the warps at each end of the rug as they are also act as the fringes.
Discover how this Kazak rug was woven
The way in which this Afghan red rug was made also oozes in tradition. Afghanistan has a deep tribal heritage and hand-weaving rugs has been perfected over generations.
This rug was handmade by hand-knotting the woollen pile onto cotton warp threads. This is a slow process by which every tuft of pile is made from a piece of coloured wool knotted onto pairs of warp threads.
This rug would have been knotted by one weaver. The weaver ties the knots in lines spanning the width of the loom. Next, weft threads are woven between the warps parallel with the knot row and are firmly compacted against the knots. These procedures are repeated until the rug is finished.
On the completed rug, all of the individual different coloured knots work together to make the pattern of the rug. This is achieved by the meticulous detail and attention of the weaver who follows the design plan to weave this rug.

This rust-red Kazak rug is a desirable choice with its cosy, bright colours and eye-catching design. Its size makes it a great option too, as this is a rug size that can be used in plenty of rooms in a home.

Frequently asked questions about Afghan rugs
Oriental rugs are renowned for their longevity and can often last for generations.
I’d like to buy it, is the rug shown the rug I’ll get?
Yes, all of our rugs are handmade and the vast majority are one-of-a-kind. This is the exact rug you will receive. No substitutions.
I’m interested in this rug, but would like to see it before I decide – can I come and see it at your shop?
Of course! All of the rugs displayed and shown as in stock on our website are available to view and buy in-store.
How quickly will I receive my rug and how much does delivery cost?

I’m not located in the UK, will you send it to destinations outside of the UK?

How long will my rug last?
Hand-knotted Rugs and Handwoven Rugs are extremely long-lasting items. If properly looked after Oriental Rugs can outlive their owner and maybe even last for generations. In many cases rugs improve with age.
Will the colours of my rug fade?
Handmade Oriental rugs will soften in colour over time. Of course, like any textile, if the rug is used in an area of strong sunlight, such as in a Conservatory for instance, the fading process will be more rapid. During days of strong sunshine, it is good practice to draw the curtains or blinds to keep your Oriental rug looking at its best.
Will the colours transfer onto the flooring underneath?
This is a tricky one to answer! If only we had a crystal ball! There is a risk. Our rugs are all handmade and made with artisan dyes. All of our rugs are thoroughly washed prior to export and any excess dye should come out in the washing process. However, on the odd occasion, the dye can still sometimes transfer. This phenomenon is increased by humidity and temperature, and is regrettably irreversible. If you are concerned about this possibility, perhaps consider using an Underlay to put a barrier between the rug and the flooring/fitted carpet underneath.
How do I care for my Afghan Rug
They are easy to care for, but here’s a few helpful pointers to keep your new Afghan rug looking great:
Vacuum
Hoover it regularly – perhaps once a week. This is good practice as tiny dirt particles can cause premature wear. Vacuum it with just the nozzle suction, as rotating brushes can be abrasive. Try to keep the vacuum cleaner away from the fringes as this is probably the weakest point on an Oriental rug; fringes and vacuum cleaners don’t mix!
Rotate
It is a good idea to rotate your Afghan rug on occasion. This will help prevent areas of concentrated wear. Foot shuffling when watching the TV is a prime culprit! Rotating your rug will also help to even-out any incremental changes in colour from exposure to sunlight.
Blot
Any spills should be blotted immediately: blot with kitchen towel or clean un-dyed absorbent cloth; avoid rubbing or scrubbing which can spread the spill or push the spill deeper into the rug.
Use a Rug Underlay
A good rug underlay will keep the rug in place, thereby preventing uneven wear and will help the rug keep from going out of shape.
Professional Cleaning
This is something that is required infrequently, perhaps every 3-5 years depending on use. Please contact us if you would like to have your rug cleaned as we offer a Rug Cleaning Service.
