How can I care for this silk rug?
The rug is handwoven with 100% silk pile woven onto a cotton warp and weft. This silk rug will need a bit more care than a carpet that is 100% wool.
Vacuuming once a week is more than sufficient to maintain this silk rug in general day to day use. If the worst were to happen do not panic, simply lightly blot (do not scrub) the area. We do also offer a Rug Cleaning and Restoration service if required.
A brief history:
The rugs of Kashmir are probably the finest rugs currently made in India. Most carpet weaving in Kashmir is done in the vicinity of Srinagar, the capital of Indian Kashmir.
Rug and carpet production in Kashmir is thought to predate the arrival of the MOGHULS in the early 16th century. By the late 18th century weaving was focused on the production of woollen shawls, which continued until it faced competition from machine made shawls from Paisley. Rug making really re-established itself in the mid 20th century.
Designs produced are heavily influenced by Persian designs from renowned rug weaving cities such as Qum, Isfahan, Kashan, Kerman and Tabriz.
Additional Information:
The majority of Kashmir rugs are hand-knotted with 100% silk pile in various qualities. The foundations: warps and wefts are typically cotton. These weave qualities can range from 18×18 asymmetrical knots per square inch (5022/dm2), 20×20 (6200/dm2), & 22×22 (7502/dm2). Often the rugs are slightly coarser than these grades.
Weaving in Kashmir is done by a “talim” system. In this method, the pattern (knots and colour specification) is written in code on long strips of paper. The master weaver would read the talim to the weavers. Sometimes this is delivered in a form of chant.

Frequently asked questions about Silk rugs
Hand-knotted Silk rugs represent the pinnacle of Oriental rug weaving, and they are renowned for their intricate detailing and opulent feel.
What makes silk rugs special?
Silk rugs are highly prized for their exceptional softness, fine detailing, luminous sheen, and luxurious appearance. Because silk fibres can be handwoven very finely, they are often used to create intricate patterns and highly detailed designs.
How hard wearing is this Silk rug?
The silk fibre is synonymous with luxury. As a pile material it is thin, fine and delicate fibre that is light reflective. Silk rugs are therefore suitable for light domestic use in such places as bedrooms and drawing rooms, or perhaps even as wall hangings.
Will this Silk rug fade?
Silk rugs can fade if exposed to strong or prolonged sunlight. To help preserve the colours, position the rug away from direct sunlight, use curtains or blinds where necessary, and rotate the rug periodically to encourage even exposure.
Is this Silk rug an investment?
We do not sell any of our rugs as investments. It is true that each rug is a beautiful item which you will treasure and admire for years. However, over decades it might appreciate in value or it might not – who knows what will be in demand in 40-50 years’ time.
Will the colours look different in different lighting?
Yes. The natural reflective sheen of silk can make colours appear to change depending on the direction of the pile and the type of lighting.
What should I do if something spills on the rug?
Blot the spill immediately with a clean, dry, absorbent cloth. Do not rub, scrub, or apply household cleaning products. Avoid adding water unless advised by a professional, and contact a specialist rug cleaner as soon as possible.
How do I care for my Silk rug
Here’s a few pointers to keep your Silk rug looking at its luxurious best:
Do not use in areas of heavy footfall.
Silk rugs are not really suitable for high traffic areas with in the home.
Use a rug underlay if using it on the floor
A good rug underlay will keep the rug in place, thereby preventing uneven wear and will help the rug keep from going out of shape.
Keep out of strong sunlight to prevent fading
If possible during time of extreme sunlight, it is always a good idea to close blinds and curtains to avoid sun damage over time.
Vacuum
Vacuum gently without a rotating brush or beater bar, and keep vacuum cleaner away from fringes
