If you're looking to add some colour, texture and interest to your hallway or corridor, this handwoven Kilim hallway runner is a great option. Not only is it reasonably priced, it boasts exquisite colours and an intriguing pattern.
It's design is a statement in itself, with a theme of coloured rosettes arranged in a chevron formation. The rosettes are in colours of mauve, turquoise, rust, blue and brown and they contrast beautifully with the neutral beige background colour.
What is this Handwoven Kilim Hallway Runner made from?
This 3m long Kilim runner was woven from just wool. A Kilim is a flat-woven rug, it therefore does not have any pile. It was made from only wool warp threads and wool weft threads.
The warp threads represent the underlying foundation of the runner. They are an important thread that we don't really notice when we look at a rug, yet they play an essential role in how the runner was made. They are the yarns that are applied to the loom before the weaving starts. You might be interested to know that the fringes that we can see poking out of each end of the runner are actually the warp threads. That's right, each one of those tassels runs the entire length of the runner and emerges at the other end. A lovely finishing touch on this Kilim Hallway runner is that the fringed ends have been beautifully embellished with colourful wool.
On this Kilim runner, it is the wefts that capture our attention. This is because on a handwoven Kilim, the wefts form the colours and design of the rug or in this case runner.
How this Kilim was handwoven
This 3m Afghan Kilim runner was woven by hand. It would have been made by one weaver.
The weaver intertwines coloured weft threads in blocks of colour to make the design of the runner. We can see (if you look closely at the photos) that where two colours meet, they join on the same warp thread. In the world of Oriental rugs this type of Kilim weave is known as "interlocking" weave. It is a beneficial type of weave because it means there are no gaps in the fabric created.
An extra bonus of this type of weave is that you can use this wool runner either way up. Yes, this runner is in fact reversible. It is the same on both sides. How cool is that?
Using this 3m long Kilim runner in your home
This Afghan Kilim was made for use on the floor. Kilims are deceptively hard wearing, although it's thin, it was made from tough Afghan wool so it will provide you with many years of enjoyment. It's 3m or 10ft length make this runner an obvious choice for use in a hallway or corridor, but you could even consider using it in a kitchen.
Given that Kilim rugs are relatively lightweight rugs, consider popping an anti-slip rug underlay beneath it. The benefits are two-fold: firstly keeping it in place makes it look great, and secondly, from a safety aspect: it will help prevent slippage.

I’d like to buy it, is the runner shown the runner I’ll get?
Yes, all of our runners are handmade and the vast majority are one-of-a-kind. This is the exact runner you will receive. No substitutions.
I’m interested in this runner, but would like to see it before I decide – can I come and see it at your shop?

I’m not located in the UK, will you send it to destinations outside of the UK?

How long will my runner last?
Hand-knotted Runners and Handwoven Runners are extremely long-lasting items. If properly looked after Oriental Rugs and runners can outlive their owner and maybe even last for generations. In many cases rugs improve with age.
Will the colours of my runner fade?
Handmade Oriental rugs and runners will soften in colour over time. Of course, like any textile, if the runner is used in an area of strong sunlight, such as in a Conservatory for instance, the fading process will be more rapid. During days of strong sunshine, it is good practice to draw the curtains or blinds to keep your Oriental rug looking at its best.
Will the colours transfer onto the flooring underneath?
This is a tricky one to answer! If only we had a crystal ball! There is a risk. Our rugs are all handmade and made with artisan dyes. All of our rugs are thoroughly washed prior to export and any excess dye should come out in the washing process. However, on the odd occasion, the dye can still sometimes transfer. This phenomenon is increased by humidity and temperature, and is regrettably irreversible. If you are concerned about this possibility, perhaps consider using an Underlay to put a barrier between the rug and the flooring/fitted carpet underneath.
How do I care for my Runner
They are easy to care for, but here’s a few helpful pointers to keep your new Afghan rug looking great:
Vacuum
Hoover it regularly – perhaps once a week. This is good practice as tiny dirt particles can cause premature wear. Vacuum it with just the nozzle suction, as rotating brushes can be abrasive. Try to keep the vacuum cleaner away from the fringes as this is probably the weakest point on an Oriental rug; fringes and vacuum cleaners don’t mix!
Rotate
It is a good idea to rotate your Afghan rug on occasion. This will help prevent areas of concentrated wear. Foot shuffling when watching the TV is a prime culprit! Rotating your rug will also help to even-out any incremental changes in colour from exposure to sunlight.
Blot
Any spills should be blotted immediately: blot with kitchen towel or clean un-dyed absorbent cloth; avoid rubbing or scrubbing which can spread the spill or push the spill deeper into the rug.
Use a Rug Underlay
A good rug underlay will keep the rug in place, thereby preventing uneven wear and will help the rug keep from going out of shape.
Professional Cleaning
This is something that is required infrequently, perhaps every 3-5 years depending on use. Please contact us if you would like to have your rug cleaned as we offer a Rug Cleaning Service.
