This vintage Afghan Kilim wide runner is an impressive flat woven rug with exquisite mature shades of purples, oranges, charcoals and browns.
It displays a traditional geometric Kilim pattern of a field of diamond motifs with a border surrounding it.
Where is this Vintage Afghan Kilim wide runner from?
This wide Kilim runner is from Afghanistan. It was woven in, or near to Maimana in north west Afghanistan. This is the capital and market town of Faryab province.
Kilim rugs have a rich heritage of being made in this region.
How was this wide Afghan runner made?
This old Afghan Kilim runner was handmade - handwoven from wool. It is flat woven.
It has woollen warps, and these important yarns form the underlying structure of the Kilim. These are the first yarns to be secured to the loom, running from the top to the bottom of the loom. These also later show as the runner's fringes.
On a Kilim it is the weft threads which make the colours and design of the rug. The weft yarns are woven in blocks of colour and when the weaver changes the colour, the next colour section is woven from the adjacent warp thread. If you look very closely, you will see a tiny gap or slit in the weave - this is known as "slit-weaving".
You might be surprised to learn an unexpected benefit of this weaving method is that this runner is reversible - it's the same on both sides.
How old is this vintage runner and where can I use it?
Although this Afghan Kilim runner is approximately 30/40 years old, it is still durable. It is in good and clean condition. It was made from just hard wearing wool and is tightly woven so it will last for many more years (probably decades) to come.
Measuring 342x142cm or 11'3x4'8 - this wide runner is a useful size for wide passage ways, hallways and corridors. It is one of those handy sizes that you can throw down in a bedroom or run it behind a sofa in a large living room.
Keeping it in position
You can keep this old Afghan Kilim runner firmly anchored in position with an anti-slip rug underlay beneath it. This wise choice will also help prevent any slips or trips as well as keeping it looking smart.

How long will my runner last?
Hand-knotted Runners and Handwoven Runners are extremely long-lasting items. If properly looked after Oriental Rugs and runners can outlive their owner and maybe even last for generations. In many cases rugs improve with age.
Will the colours of my runner fade?
Handmade Oriental rugs and runners will soften in colour over time. Of course, like any textile, if the runner is used in an area of strong sunlight, such as in a Conservatory for instance, the fading process will be more rapid. During days of strong sunshine, it is good practice to draw the curtains or blinds to keep your Oriental rug looking at its best.
Will the colours transfer onto the flooring underneath?
This is a tricky one to answer! If only we had a crystal ball! There is a risk. Our rugs are all handmade and made with artisan dyes. All of our rugs are thoroughly washed prior to export and any excess dye should come out in the washing process. However, on the odd occasion, the dye can still sometimes transfer. This phenomenon is increased by humidity and temperature, and is regrettably irreversible. If you are concerned about this possibility, perhaps consider using an Underlay to put a barrier between the rug and the flooring/fitted carpet underneath.
How do I care for my Runner
They are easy to care for, but here’s a few helpful pointers to keep your new Afghan rug looking great:
Vacuum
Hoover it regularly – perhaps once a week. This is good practice as tiny dirt particles can cause premature wear. Vacuum it with just the nozzle suction, as rotating brushes can be abrasive. Try to keep the vacuum cleaner away from the fringes as this is probably the weakest point on an Oriental rug; fringes and vacuum cleaners don’t mix!
Rotate
It is a good idea to rotate your Afghan rug on occasion. This will help prevent areas of concentrated wear. Foot shuffling when watching the TV is a prime culprit! Rotating your rug will also help to even-out any incremental changes in colour from exposure to sunlight.
Blot
Any spills should be blotted immediately: blot with kitchen towel or clean un-dyed absorbent cloth; avoid rubbing or scrubbing which can spread the spill or push the spill deeper into the rug.
Use a Rug Underlay
A good rug underlay will keep the rug in place, thereby preventing uneven wear and will help the rug keep from going out of shape.
Professional Cleaning
This is something that is required infrequently, perhaps every 3-5 years depending on use. Please contact us if you would like to have your rug cleaned as we offer a Rug Cleaning Service.
