Learn some more about this Afghan Khorjin Runner
This Khorjin design runner is a handmade rug. In recent times, the ever resourceful Afghan rug weavers and producers have been reworking ancient rug patterns by injecting these age-old designs with contemporary style appealing to modern-day tastes.
This Khorjin runner adheres to this concept. The design origin / inspiration behind this Afghan runner is rooted in the tribal heritage of Afghanistan. The name "Khorjin" is attributed to saddle-bags; these are tribal bags with a large pocket on either side used by nomads on pack animals.
On this contemporary-take of this design concept, the patterned sections on each end of the runner represent the pocket part of the saddle-bag, whilst the striped section in between mimics the flat woven underside of the bag. The result is a modern-looking runner with design embedded from a tribal past.
Find out what this Afghan runner was made from
In keeping with tradition, this modern Afghan runner was made with typically durable natural fibres.
It is made from wool for the pile of this runner. The woollen pile is hard wearing; it is hand-spun and coloured with beautiful natural dyes. The benefit of hand-spinning the woollen yarn is that it creates a strong fibre because of the high twist.
Another delightful feature of this Afghan runner that you might notice is the intricate finishing on its ends. After the woollen pile, on each end there is an elaborate lattice of cotton which culminates in the fringe, which is grouped and wrapped with colourful embellishments.
There is more to this than meets the eye. These cotton fringes are also known as the warp threads. These important cotton yarns are the starting point from which the runner was made, as they are the first threads to be attached to the loom. Each thread of tassel, therefore travels the length of the runner and exits at the other end. The warps are thus, the yarns upon which the pile / knots are secured onto.
Discover how this Khorjin design runner rug was made
This Afghan modern runner was handmade with age-old rug weaving techniques.
The gorgeous pile of this runner was made by a method of hand-knotting. This is a meticulous and time-consuming way of rug making. By this method, each tuft of pile is created by the weaver tying a knot onto pairs of warp threads i.e. the knot ends make the tuft. The weaver knots in rows from one side of the loom to the other. After the line of knots is completed, wefts are woven between the knots and are compacted against the line of knots. The weaver will repeat this over and over, and the rug begins to form.
The weaver works to a plan, and the sequence of all of the many different coloured knots combine to create the pattern of the runner.

How long will my runner last?
Hand-knotted Runners and Handwoven Runners are extremely long-lasting items. If properly looked after Oriental Rugs and runners can outlive their owner and maybe even last for generations. In many cases rugs improve with age.
Will the colours of my runner fade?
Handmade Oriental rugs and runners will soften in colour over time. Of course, like any textile, if the runner is used in an area of strong sunlight, such as in a Conservatory for instance, the fading process will be more rapid. During days of strong sunshine, it is good practice to draw the curtains or blinds to keep your Oriental rug looking at its best.
Will the colours transfer onto the flooring underneath?
This is a tricky one to answer! If only we had a crystal ball! There is a risk. Our rugs are all handmade and made with artisan dyes. All of our rugs are thoroughly washed prior to export and any excess dye should come out in the washing process. However, on the odd occasion, the dye can still sometimes transfer. This phenomenon is increased by humidity and temperature, and is regrettably irreversible. If you are concerned about this possibility, perhaps consider using an Underlay to put a barrier between the rug and the flooring/fitted carpet underneath.
How do I care for my Runner
They are easy to care for, but here’s a few helpful pointers to keep your new Afghan rug looking great:
Vacuum
Hoover it regularly – perhaps once a week. This is good practice as tiny dirt particles can cause premature wear. Vacuum it with just the nozzle suction, as rotating brushes can be abrasive. Try to keep the vacuum cleaner away from the fringes as this is probably the weakest point on an Oriental rug; fringes and vacuum cleaners don’t mix!
Rotate
It is a good idea to rotate your Afghan rug on occasion. This will help prevent areas of concentrated wear. Foot shuffling when watching the TV is a prime culprit! Rotating your rug will also help to even-out any incremental changes in colour from exposure to sunlight.
Blot
Any spills should be blotted immediately: blot with kitchen towel or clean un-dyed absorbent cloth; avoid rubbing or scrubbing which can spread the spill or push the spill deeper into the rug.
Use a Rug Underlay
A good rug underlay will keep the rug in place, thereby preventing uneven wear and will help the rug keep from going out of shape.
Professional Cleaning
This is something that is required infrequently, perhaps every 3-5 years depending on use. Please contact us if you would like to have your rug cleaned as we offer a Rug Cleaning Service.
