A stunning and exceptional antique rug with an uncompromising intensity of colour and bold characteristic geometric design of the traditional, sought after and collectible Caucasian Kazak rugs. It is beautifully proportioned and presents a captivating multicoloured palette of rich reds, deep blues, old white that sets off patterns, yellow-golds, grey-violets, tenacious teals, walnut browns, olive browns and black.
Colour Combinations
The variety of hues in this unique antique piece work with striking clarity against the tranquil blue field, creating a powerful, yet surprisingly balanced effect. A particularly charming detail is the teal abrash within one of the end medallions, adding subtle variation and further character to the palette. The rosettes within the minor borders glow against the tones of red, while the dark black contours provide definition and an intriguing chiselled relief.
This Handmade Antique Rug's Composition
Six proudly connected diamond- shaped medallions command the central field, surrounded by an imaginative repertoire of geometric motifs and decorative devices. Repeated rosettes, stepped diamonds and the geometric border creates a wonderful sense of rhythm with the abundance of pattern.
This Antique piece is bold and robust in-design with use of splendid repeated borders of rosettes and stepped diamonds of incredibly varying patterns and colour combinations. Ornaments, symbols and motifs abound spaciously in the stunning blue field containing the connecting medallions.
A Unique Interior Mood
This piece in unmistakably Kazak in spirit with the eye-catching primary colours, confident geometry design with a strong decorative language. The overall mood and colours are typical and distinct for Kazak rugs with colouration ans clear-cut patterns. The composition is to be admired and be absorbed by. It has an angular, yet elegant design for modern or traditional decors.
It has a stong design that would be compelling in diverse interiors to add elegance, combined with the gravitas of an antique with artistic significance. We would recommend using an underlay with the piece because of it's age and wool warp and weft.
Recognisable Structural Features of Caucasian Kazak Rugs
Kazak rugs are from the south-west Caucasus. These are desirable rugs and recognisable for their strong geometric designs and clear uniformity of colour. Identifiable features of Caucasian Kazak rugs (from this era) are that the warp threads (these are the fringe threads that we can see at each end of the rug) are of natural coloured wool.
The weft threads are also made of wool: typically red or brown, with two wefts threads inserted after each row of knots. Kazak rugs tend to have thicker pile than other types of Caucasian rugs - the theory being that the more mountainous the village location of manufacture; the thicker the rug.
Interesting Features to Explore
Amongst the beautiful blue field you can discover many improvised creative stylized flowers and geometric devices as well as two charming woven interpretations of little creatures, possibly sheepdogs. flanking the connecting medallions with the central star flowers.

Frequently asked questions about Antique rugs
At The Oriental Rug Merchant, we are always on the look-out for interesting antique and old rugs. Often these are either no longer made in these places, or the carpet weaving has evolved into a more market-reactive enterprise.
These rugs often look “at home” in period properties (almost like they have always been there), but conversely can be a spectacular statement piece in an ultra-modern setting.
Is this the exact rug I’ll receive?
Yes. All of our antique rugs are unique, so this is the exact rug you will receive. No substitutions.
Have you cleaned this antique rug?
Yes, we are fastidious about putting any old or antique rug into our stock and before it is offered for sale it will have been professionally washed.
How hard wearing is this antique rug?
Due to its age and to keep this rug looking at its best for future keepers we recommend that this rug is not suitable for use in high traffic areas.
Should I put something under it to stop it from slipping?
We recommend using an anti-slip rug underlay with all rugs, but especially thin antique rugs. This will help protect the rug by keeping it flat as well as stopping you from slipping on it.
Is this rug an investment?
We don’t sell any of our rugs as investments. Antique rugs are unique items and certainly very special, and as such they are beautiful items to own and treasure. No rug should be purchased solely as an investment, as values can vary over time.
Before I decide, can I come and inspect it in person?
Of course, we’d love to welcome you to visit our shop. It’s a great idea to look closely at any antique rug that you’re considering to purchase. We’ll point out any repairs or areas of wear in the rug. Let us know that you’re coming and we will have it ready for you to look at, along with any other rugs that take your fancy.
How should I care for this antique rug?
To preserve them for their next custodian, we always expertly wash the rugs that we discover and where possible/or financially viable repair them. Here’s some helpful pointers to keep your new antique rug looking at its best:
Vacuum
Vacuum gently without use of rotating brush or beater bar; take care to keep vacuum cleaner away from the fringed ends.
Underlay
A good rug underlay will keep the rug in place, thereby preventing uneven wear and will help the rug keep from going out of shape.
Protect from sun-light
If possible during time of extreme sunlight, it is always a good idea to close blinds and curtains to avoid sun damage over time.
Be mindful of where you place it
Antique rugs keep much better when used in lower traffic areas in homes
Professional clean only
This is something that is required infrequently, perhaps every 3-5 years depending on use. Please contact us if you would like to have your rug cleaned as we offer a Rug Cleaning Service.
