What is a handmade Sari Silk rug?
The Sari, also spelled saree, is a traditional women’s garment worn throughout India. The word sari means “a strip of cloth,” and its history can be traced back to the Indus Valley Civilization, which existed from around 2800 to 1800 BC. Early saris were commonly made from cotton, but by about 2000 BC, silk began to be woven into these garments, giving rise to the classic sari style known today.
Decorative details such as intricate embroidery and vibrant dyes were often used to reflect a woman’s social standing—the more elaborate the sari, the higher her status was likely to be. Over time, saris naturally wear out, but rather than discard such beautiful fabric, women often saved and repurposed the material to create other useful items. This practice of recycling sari fabric became increasingly popular as the 21st century approached.
From this tradition came Sari Silk Ribbon. Made from 100% Sari Silk, it has been used to create rugs like this one.
Where can I use this Sari Silk rug
This Sari Silk rug is a classy choice and will add artisanal character to contemporary, bohemian, or classic interiors.
Measuring 231x156cm, it is super-soft and luxurious to walk upon. The size works perfectly as a striking statement piece in living rooms, lounges, or bedrooms.
How was it made?
This modern rug was made by traditional methods of hand-knotting.
The sari-silk pile is formed by a weaver tying tufts of sari-silk ribbon onto pairs of warp threads. These knots are tied in rows across the width of the loom. Weft threads are then woven between the warp threads.

Frequently asked questions about Silk rugs
Hand-knotted Silk rugs represent the pinnacle of Oriental rug weaving, and they are renowned for their intricate detailing and opulent feel.
What makes silk rugs special?
Silk rugs are highly prized for their exceptional softness, fine detailing, luminous sheen, and luxurious appearance. Because silk fibres can be handwoven very finely, they are often used to create intricate patterns and highly detailed designs.
How hard wearing is this Silk rug?
The silk fibre is synonymous with luxury. As a pile material it is thin, fine and delicate fibre that is light reflective. Silk rugs are therefore suitable for light domestic use in such places as bedrooms and drawing rooms, or perhaps even as wall hangings.
Will this Silk rug fade?
Silk rugs can fade if exposed to strong or prolonged sunlight. To help preserve the colours, position the rug away from direct sunlight, use curtains or blinds where necessary, and rotate the rug periodically to encourage even exposure.
Is this Silk rug an investment?
We do not sell any of our rugs as investments. It is true that each rug is a beautiful item which you will treasure and admire for years. However, over decades it might appreciate in value or it might not – who knows what will be in demand in 40-50 years’ time.
Will the colours look different in different lighting?
Yes. The natural reflective sheen of silk can make colours appear to change depending on the direction of the pile and the type of lighting.
What should I do if something spills on the rug?
Blot the spill immediately with a clean, dry, absorbent cloth. Do not rub, scrub, or apply household cleaning products. Avoid adding water unless advised by a professional, and contact a specialist rug cleaner as soon as possible.
How do I care for my Silk rug
Here’s a few pointers to keep your Silk rug looking at its luxurious best:
Do not use in areas of heavy footfall.
Silk rugs are not really suitable for high traffic areas with in the home.
Use a rug underlay if using it on the floor
A good rug underlay will keep the rug in place, thereby preventing uneven wear and will help the rug keep from going out of shape.
Keep out of strong sunlight to prevent fading
If possible during time of extreme sunlight, it is always a good idea to close blinds and curtains to avoid sun damage over time.
Vacuum
Vacuum gently without a rotating brush or beater bar, and keep vacuum cleaner away from fringes
