Find out some more about this Multicolour Kilim Short Runner
This colourful handwoven Kilim runner was woven by hand in Afghanistan. Historically, many Afghan Kilim rugs were woven in and around the town of Maimana in north west Afghanistan.
A Kilim is a rug which has been flat woven, this short Kilim runner therefore does not have a piled surface. This runner was made for use on the floor and it was made totally from wool. This Afghan Kilim runner thus consists of wool warps and wool wefts.
Handwoven runner rug
This multicolour Kilim runner would have been woven by one weaver. Kilim weaving is an ancient craft that is little changed over thousands of years.
The colours and designs of a Kilim rug that we enjoy are created by colourful weft threads. The weaver weaves these wefts in blocks of colour between the warps. The warps are the first yarns fastened to the loom, and act as the foundation fibres of the rug. If you study the close-up pictures closely, you will see a small vertical slit between the blocks of colour. This occurs because in order to make the pattern the weaver starts the next colour section from the adjacent warp thread. In the Oriental rug trade we call this technique "slit weaving".
The slit weaving method restricts the designs to straight and diagonal lines. The patterns thus created tend to be diamond, triangles and stepped motifs.
Using this Afghan Kilim runner in your home
The measurements 192x84cm, approximately 6'4x2'9 of this Kilim Short Runner are rather useful. Often the short Afghan Kilim runners that we stock are much narrower than this piece, typically they are around 60cm or 2ft wide.
This size could be a handy addition for use in a hallway or corridor, but you could also lay it in a kitchen or utility room, or even as a narrow hearth rug.
Kilim rugs are surprisingly durable. This Afghan runner was made from just wool which is universally known for it's toughness.
Pop it onto an anti-slip rug underlay to hold it firmly in position. You'll find this helpful from a safety point of view, as it will help prevent any mishaps, and it will also help hold the runner flat to the floor, thereby keeping it looking smart.
One more thing about this Kilim runner that might interest you...
This handwoven runner rug is two-sided. One of the amazing features of this type of Kilim rug is that because of the way in which it was woven, it is in fact the same on both sides. How handy is that?

Yes, all of our runners are handmade and the vast majority are one-of-a-kind. This is the exact runner you will receive. No substitutions.

How long will my runner last?
Hand-knotted Runners and Handwoven Runners are extremely long-lasting items. If properly looked after Oriental Rugs and runners can outlive their owner and maybe even last for generations. In many cases rugs improve with age.
Will the colours of my runner fade?
Handmade Oriental rugs and runners will soften in colour over time. Of course, like any textile, if the runner is used in an area of strong sunlight, such as in a Conservatory for instance, the fading process will be more rapid. During days of strong sunshine, it is good practice to draw the curtains or blinds to keep your Oriental rug looking at its best.
Will the colours transfer onto the flooring underneath?
This is a tricky one to answer! If only we had a crystal ball! There is a risk. Our rugs are all handmade and made with artisan dyes. All of our rugs are thoroughly washed prior to export and any excess dye should come out in the washing process. However, on the odd occasion, the dye can still sometimes transfer. This phenomenon is increased by humidity and temperature, and is regrettably irreversible. If you are concerned about this possibility, perhaps consider using an Underlay to put a barrier between the rug and the flooring/fitted carpet underneath.
How do I care for my Runner
They are easy to care for, but here’s a few helpful pointers to keep your new Afghan rug looking great:
Vacuum
Hoover it regularly – perhaps once a week. This is good practice as tiny dirt particles can cause premature wear. Vacuum it with just the nozzle suction, as rotating brushes can be abrasive. Try to keep the vacuum cleaner away from the fringes as this is probably the weakest point on an Oriental rug; fringes and vacuum cleaners don’t mix!
Rotate
It is a good idea to rotate your Afghan rug on occasion. This will help prevent areas of concentrated wear. Foot shuffling when watching the TV is a prime culprit! Rotating your rug will also help to even-out any incremental changes in colour from exposure to sunlight.
Blot
Any spills should be blotted immediately: blot with kitchen towel or clean un-dyed absorbent cloth; avoid rubbing or scrubbing which can spread the spill or push the spill deeper into the rug.
Use a Rug Underlay
A good rug underlay will keep the rug in place, thereby preventing uneven wear and will help the rug keep from going out of shape.
Professional Cleaning
This is something that is required infrequently, perhaps every 3-5 years depending on use. Please contact us if you would like to have your rug cleaned as we offer a Rug Cleaning Service.
